Growing business in Binjari

Debbie Aloisi was surprised when she looked across at the community oval and saw the council had sent a workman 15 kilometres from Katherine to Binjari to mow the lawn.

“I immediately rang the council and said, ‘We can mow’.”

The council has since awarded the lawn-mowing contract and other municipal contracts in the community to the Binjari Aboriginal Corporation.

It was the humble start of a revolution. The corporation won a couple of house maintenance contracts but soon realised it couldn’t grow any further without outside help.

Ms Aloisi turned to the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Trade, Business and Innovation, Small Business Champions team, which provided a $10,000 Business Growth grant in 2015.
